Gordon Lester is our new Chief Executive

After commanding a submarine and managing a national network of volunteers, Gordon Lester is stepping up to what he describes as "his most exciting challenge yet". Gordon became the new Chief Executive of North Devon Hospice on March 31st after Philip Jewel stepped down from the post after an incredible 23 years.

A former Naval officer, Gordon's last job was Operations Director for SSAFA, a national charity which supports the families of servicemen. He said "When I first visited the hopisce, the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff and volunteers really shone through. I cant believe that now I'm really here because I've been looking forward to this challenge for a long time."

Gordon has been quick to familiarise himself with the hospice and the people who make it tick. "I spent my first few weeks simply meeting people and chatting to them - whether formally or informally," he said. "I'd like to think I've met all the staff and as many volunteers as possible, this has included visits to the shops out in the community too. It's been great hearing what people have to say about the hospice and it's clear that North Devon people hold the hospice very dear in their hearts.

Philip Jewell, Gordon's predecessor, wished him luck in his new role. "After 23 years with the hospice I can step down knowing we have a pool of talented and committed staff and volunteers, a strong reputation in the community, a sound financial basis and referrals on the increase. I believe Gordon will be able to build on this success and I wish him every luck for the future."
