North Devon Hospice are delighted to announce the success of

The Countess of Arran MBE DL inaugural

Palliative Care Conference

Marking 25 years of hopsice care in North Devon

Held on the 4th September at The Barnstaple Hotel in North Devon, the conference, entitled Palliative Care and the Art of the Possible, attracted a full house with the help of our highly eminent speakers, including:

  • Prof. Karol Sikora - Professor of Cancer Medicine, Imperial College. 'Cancer, a disease of our time: hope, hype and reality'
  • Prof. Sheila Payne - Chair in Hospice Studies, Help the Hospices. 'Family carers and end of life care: new challenges and opportunities'
  • Prof. Sam Ahmedzai - Professor in Palliative Medicine, University of Sheffield. 'Palliative care for the 21st century: from expiration to inspiration'
  • Dr. Charles Campion-Smith - Macmillan GP Advisor, Dorset. 'Companions on the cancer journey: the challenge for health care professionals'
  • Dr. Tim Hunt - Emeritus Consultant in Palliative Medicine. 'Positive winds of change: the renewed importance of the patient'

Organised by our Head of Education, Jenny Penson, the conference was a huge success. The speakers were each informative, sensitive and entertaining, offering a comprehensive day for doctors, nurses and patients alike.

As hoped, the conference encouraged health care professionals from this area and from further afield to come and share their expertise. The main goal of the event was to develop and improve care for people with life-threatening illnesses and their families. With the line-up of international speakers, this was a rich and rewarding experience for all guests.

A huge thank you to all speakers, to all guests and in particular to Jenny Penson for the success of this fantastic event.
