Update from hospice Chief Executive, Stephen
To the North Devon community we serve,
During these anxious and ever changing times, I want to provide you an update on what North Devon Hospice is doing to address the challenges that COVID19 creates. First and foremost, we will continue to support patients and their loved ones to the best of our abilities. We are pro-actively monitoring and following national guidance, and with this in mind we have had to adapt how we provide some of our care. This includes:
- Our Community Nurses will continue caring for patients at home, but they will telephone patients ahead of a visit, to ascertain whether they or a member of their family have symptoms or are self-isolating. Support will also be provided by our community teams via telephone, which is part of their normal practice
- Our Supportive Care teams, who provide our patients and families with emotional support, will move to telephone support
- Our Bedded Unit will continue providing round-the-clock care as usual, but with some limitations on the number of visitations our patients are able to receive
As a local charity, we are reliant on the generosity of the local community to provide vital care to local people. Like many other organisations, one of our biggest challenges will be managing an inevitable drop in funds being raised for the charity, as the current situation will affect everything from our fundraising events, to our charity shops, to our hospice lottery.
We will continue to try and keep our shops open and continue with fundraising activities, while following national guidance. Naturally, this position will be reviewed daily.
Thank you for your continued support during these times. It is needed now more than ever.
We are here for you, and only because of you. We will continue to update you as the situation develops.
Thinking of you all
