As well as three days of great music, real ale, cider, street food, camping and glamping and a host of quirky craft stalls, there will be lots of events supporting the Festival and visitors are guaranteed a weekend of fantastic Festival fun.

The event kicks off at 6pm on Friday 30th June with Somerset band, The Dirty Blues and popular local band, Big Al & The Wild Strawberries. (for a full Festival music line up log on to

RECYCLE YOUR WELLIES - Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd July (11am to 4pm)

Instead of chucking away your wellie boots when you grow out of them or when they become well-worn, why not turn them into something creative.  Celia Lancaster, director of Love Art Design, who make bespoke props and games will be running a workshop.  So come along and have fun and learn how to transform your wellies into something you will love and want to treasure.

There will be no charge for the Wellie recycling workshop but we will be inviting those attending to make a small donation to North Devon Hospice.

Workshops will run from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 1st July and Sunday 2nd July and is open to adults and children.

Children will be invited to take part in a fun wellie wanging competition on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July and we will be on the look-out for the child who can chuck their wellie the furthest.

FESTIVAL FASHION – ROCK THE CATWALK (Sunday only) -  2pm Children 3 pm Adults

On Sunday 2nd July at 3pm seasoned Festival goers are being invited to dig out their favourite festival frocks, haul on their hot pants and rock the Catwalk in their wellies.  Judges will be looking for the top Festival outfit so participants need to be creative, funky and quirky if they want to win a fabulous Glamping weekend for two at Coastal Cabins nestled in between the breathtaking North Devon Coast and the pretty village of Hartland. This is Glamping at its finest and our Queen of Festival fashion can relax and unwind in a proper kingsize bed, cook up a storm in the kitchenettes and glamp up in en-suite shower rooms before chilling outside on the decking area and enjoy this magical North Devon location.

The runner up to the Queen of Festival fashion will win a fabulous pair of Joules wellies which will be the perfect companions for UK summer festivals.

Entry will be a very modest £2 and all entry fees will go directly to North Devon Hospice.

WELLIE TUG OF WAR IN YOUR WELLIES (Sunday only – 3.30pm)

Festival organiser Anne Tattersall is looking for teams of 8 to take part in a Tug of War contest with a twist as contestants will be required to tug the rope in wellies.  There will be no hob-nailed boots, high heels or sneaky spikes to keep teams grounded and the soles of the wellies will go through a rigorous checking procedure prior to each tug.

Other rules for the Wellie Tug of War will include:

  • No gloves or lucky charms
  • No chanting or war cries
  • No illegal substances or enhancing drugs jewellery or false nails
  • No strong perfumes
  • No name calling or ridiculing

Simon Lacey, master brewery of the Awarding winning Country Life Brewery which is based at the BIG Sheep will be presenting a barrel of his finest ale to the winning team.  Simon is the most decorated brewer in the South West after winning two golds and overall bronze at the 2017 Tucker’s Maltings Beer Festival and his beer is a good enough reason for teams to participate in this fun event.

Everyone owns a pair of wellies and we are inviting visitors to the Festival to give their wellies a make-over and bedazzle the Wellie Parade judges.  Judging will take place at 4.15pm on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July and judges will be looking for wellie boots that combine fun, innovation and quirkiness.  Entrants can decorate their wellies with fabric, paint their favourite scenes or do whatever they need to do to turn their wellie boots in something out of this world.  The winning wellies will take home the coveted Golden Wellie Trophy which is being secretly designed in readiness for the Festival

Log on to for a full festival programme, to book your festival tickets and download entry forms for the Festival Fashion, Floral Design and Tug of War.

This floristry competition will be open to children and adults to create an imaginative floral display in a single wellie or pair of wellies, using flowers, foliage, berries etc. There will be two categories, children and adults.  Entry forms which must be completed by Sunday 11th June 2017 can be downloaded from or by ringing 01237 47236 to the competition will be free and a certificate will be awarded to everyone who participates with prizes for the winner of both categories.

The BIG Sheep is renowned for their famous Sheepstake’s race with guests betting on sheep named, Aldernitty, Sheargar, Red Ram, Woolly Jumper, Golden Fleece and Little Pullover racing daily at the attraction.  Jockeys in The Wellie Grand National will decided by our sponsors Mole Valley Farmers, North Devon Gazette, Joules Clothing and Majestic Wine Barnstaple.

The festival will culminate in a wellie booting barn dance in the BIG Sheep’s EWE2 event’s building on Sunday 2nd July from 2pm to 6pm.  A chance to wear out the rubber soles of your wellies and boogies in your boots.

Opening the Festival at 6pm on Friday the 30th June will be one of Devon’s favourite bands, The Wild Strawberries.  Lead vocalist BIG Al Mitchell, whose previous band, The Cult Maniacs attracted mass media headlines in the early eighties describes The Wild Strawberries as a band who gets the crowds on their feet and dancing to the music and says. ‘Anyone who can’t dance to the Wild Strawberries has no soul.’

Joining the Wild Strawberries will be Braunton based band, Bright Lights Collection. The band are made up of Iain and Merry Springate and Ant Parker. The band celebrated the beginning of 2017 with their debut album ‘Miracle Contained’. Although Iain, Merry and Ant are the core members of the collective they are often joined by other musicians depending on who is around at the time so you never know who might join them on stage at the Wellie Festival.  Iain says, “Bright Lights Collective brings us together to play music that celebrates people and shines a light on those situations where social justice is forgotten, and as a society we forget how to walk humbly and love justice.”

The full band line-up will be confirmed by the end of April so log on to for band updates.  If any bands are keen to take part they should email
