A special remembrance event
Every year, we welcome people to join us on Instow beach to remember someone they have lost. In memory of a loved one, they place a flower onto a specially-made raft and remember they are not alone in missing someone special.
When someone dies, it is only natural that we seek ways of remembering them. At the hospice, we have two annual events that give people an opportunity to remember a loved one in a meaningful and sensitive way. These are Light Up a Life, which takes place in the winter, and our summer remembrance event, Floating Bye.
Floating Bye is a moving and supportive evening in remembrance of our loved ones. People are invited to write a message to someone special and tie it to an orange gerbera flower. The flower is then placed onto our specially made raft, before it is floated down the estuary at sunset. Held every summer, we gather on Instow beach and with gentle background music and some words of poetry, we stand together as the sun goes down, watching the raft of flowers float out to sea with the tide.
It is a special occasion and, as we stand together, we realise that we are not alone in missing someone close to us. There is a feeling of great support as we remember those no longer with us and celebrate the impact they had on our lives. This event is open to everyone in the community, whether you or your loved ones have had any contact with North Devon Hospice or not.
In exchange for a donation to the hospice, you are welcome to join us on Instow Beach and we will give you a card to write your message and an orange gerbera flower to place on the raft. The next Floating Bye event takes place in June 2023. If you are unable to join us on the day, you can make your donation and write your message in advance, and we will personally lay your card and flower on the raft for you.
By taking part in Floating Bye, not only are you remembering someone special in a truly unique way, your donation will also help North Devon Hospice care for local people today and into the future. It is a beautiful way to honour a memory and make a difference in your community.
