More than 750 runners laced up last weekend to take on the North Devon Marathon, widely regarded as one of the toughest and most stunning races in the UK, all raising vital funds for North Devon Hospice.
Now in its 17th year, participants tackled either a 10k, half marathon, or full marathon route along the breathtaking North Devon coastline – taking in sights like Woolacombe beach, Baggy Point, Croyde, Saunton, Morte Point, Lee village and the stunning surrounding countryside. It is hoped that more than £40,000 will have been raised, helping North Devon Hospice to provide care and support for local people facing a life-limiting illness.
Despite soaring temperatures and muggy conditions, runners rose to the challenge of the rugged and hilly course. Each participant could be proud of their achievement for simply crossing the finish line.
Runners travelled from across the UK and beyond to take on this unique challenge. One of those was Billy McColl from Bournemouth, who said the event was even tougher than he expected! “What a lovely route!” he said. “The first half was really enjoyable with light rolling hills and stunning views over Woolacombe. But the second half... wow! It was seriously hilly and the terrain was much more demanding. I underestimated how tough it would be, but I pushed on to finish in five hours and 12 minutes.”
Bethany Ixer, from Axminster, added: “This has been the best running event I’ve attended by a country mile. So many water stations throughout, marshals that cheer on the runners, and totally inclusive. I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did, but it was incredible.”
Local runners were well-represented on the podium, with Jack Hastings of Bideford Athletic Club claiming the men’s 10k title in 40:53, and Helen Harbottle of South Molton Strugglers winning the women’s 10k race in 47:21.
In the half marathon, James Gillanders of London Frontrunners won the men’s race in 1:37:15, with Annabel Granger taking the women’s title in 1:47:43. The full marathon men’s race was won by Jack Blackburn of Pontypridd Running Club in 3:19:36, while Naomi Shaw took the female full marathon prize in 4:23:44.
The event marked the final time that local running legend Simon Oliver would act as race director. He is the founder of the North Devon Marathon, coming up with the stunning route himself after years of running in the area surrounding his Woolacombe home.
On the day, Simon’s incredible contribution was recognised with a special medal and framed photo of the route map, presented by North Devon Hospice Chief Executive, Stephen Roberts. “Simon Oliver has been an inspiration and should be very proud of what he has created with this event,” said Stephen. “Most importantly, the benefit to North Devon Hospice has been immense because over more than 15 years, hundreds of thousands of pounds have been raised for the cause. That means thousands of patients and their families have been cared for, when it matters most, thanks to Simon and the hard work he has put in. We want to say a huge thank you for everything.”
The event wouldn’t be possible without generous support from local sponsors. Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks returned as headline sponsor this year and brought great energy to race day. Joe, the parks’ Entertainment Manager, shared why they continue to back the event: “It’s so important for us to be involved. We’re a family-run business and we know just how valuable family is. That’s why we proudly support North Devon Hospice. We had eight team members running and offered lots of fun activities for families too. It was a fantastic day and we were proud to be supporting such a vital cause.”
Georgia Bedgood, Events Manager at North Devon Hospice, thanked all who helped to make the event possible: “We’re so grateful to all of our sponsors including Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks, TDK-Lambda, Zero 7 Telecoms, Vertu MINI Exeter, North Devon Coast National Landscape, Parkin Estates, St John’s Garden Centre, and Panoptic. Thanks also go to the local landowners and, of course, our wonderful volunteers. You all made this an unforgettable day. The funds raised will make a difference to hundreds of local people, allowing them to get the care they need when it matters most.”
