The Longhouse was opened 10 years ago this month, to provide a supportive sanctuary to those facing a life-limiting illness and their loved ones too. Since then, well over 1,000 local people have found their own community here, enjoying relief for the mind, body and soul during their darkest days.
Generously funded by the community in Holsworthy, The Longhouse was specifically built with our patients’ comfort in mind, this space is a welcoming and relaxing retreat for anyone in the local area to access regularly; providing counselling, group support, therapies and creative sessions along with nurse consultations and much more.
The Longhouse has been an absolute lifeline for local residents like Anita, whose beloved husband, Nigel, was a regular visitor to the centre.
“We found an incredible community at the hospice outreach centre in Holsworthy, The Longhouse. Nige and I would go along to every session we could, where we might enjoy a relaxing therapy or just a cuppa and a chat. It was a sanctuary, where everyone understood us.”
“The care we received at home was also out of this world. Nige wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else, because he loved our home and being with our dogs. So, our hospice nurse visited us for many years, helping us through every step of the journey.
Even in Nige’s final days, the Hospice to Home team visited every day to make sure he was comfy and that I was OK too. We really couldn’t have coped without them, and it meant Nige could die peacefully in the place he loved.”
“Not many people know that this kind of care even happens. But it does, every single day. Even now, the hospice team are helping me adjust to a new life, and I know they’ll be there as long as I need them.”
As well as the support available at the Longhouse, we provide care in the wider community too. Our Hospice to Home team make regular visits to patients’ homes to ensure they are comfortable in their surroundings, provide hands-on care and help manage symptoms such as pain or sickness.
Working with our Hospice to Home team, we have a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist for Holsworthy and the surrounding areas, who liaises with local GP surgeries and other healthcare professionals involved in someone’s care, to best support them.
Our teams, together, can help plan your future care, assist with personal care, help with referrals for financial support, offer emotional support and practical needs and much, much more.
We cover the entirety of North Devon, and pride ourselves on being able to support even the most rural of parts of our beautiful county. After all, home is where the heart is, and we are there to care for patients and families, every step of the way.
