This page is filled with tips and advice to help ensure your fundraising is a big success!
Our patients and their families are at the heart of everything we do. All our services are provided completely free of charge, but to do this, we need to raise over £6 million every year, from scratch.
We would not be here without the support of fundraisers like you, our volunteers and the continued generosity of our community. The difference we want to make is all about you, the people of North Devon. Your life is a story, and we believe the ending matters.
Whether you decide to take on a challenge, bake a cake, put on a quiz, walk on the wings of a plane – we are your biggest fans, and you are amazing!
Caring for patients and families is one of the highest privileges imaginable. We are only able to do this thanks to the generosity of our local community who show their support in so many different ways. We can only hope that their vital fundraising continues so we can be here for as long as we are needed.
Your generosity and dedication is needed now, more than ever, as we try to help the growing number of patients and families who need us. Every activity and every donation – large or small – matters. Nothing can change the increasing need for our services: death is a part of life. But by supporting us now, you can give more people the chance to receive our outstanding care in the months and years to come.
Picking your perfect fundraising idea is so important because when you get it right, you’ll have more fun, engage more people and raise more money!
Plan Early – Give yourself plenty of time to organise, promote, and gather resources.
Set Clear Goals – Decide how much you want to raise and what the event will achieve.
Know Your Audience – Tailor the activity to the people most likely to attend or donate.
Create a Budget – Keep costs low so more of what you raise goes to the hospice.
Get a Team Together – Recruit helpers to share tasks and make the event run smoothly.
Promote Widely – Use social media, posters, emails, and word-of-mouth to spread the word.
Make It Fun and Engaging – People are more likely to attend, participate, and donate if it’s enjoyable.
Include Simple Ways to Donate – Offer online donations, cash collections, or raffle tickets.
Set up an Online Fundraising Page - creating an online page through platforms like JustGiving makes it easy to collect donations and share your challenge with friends and family. Simply sign up, personalise your page with your story and photos, and share the link to start fundraising instantly.
Thank Everyone – Show appreciation to volunteers, attendees, and donors. Let people know how much was raised and the impact it will have.
How to Make the Most of Your Challenge Fundraising
Taking on a challenge is not just about pushing yourself – it’s also a powerful way to raise vital funds for North Devon Hospice. Whether you’re running a marathon, cycling across the moors, trekking in memory of a loved one, or signing up for one of our official events, your effort will inspire others to give generously.
Set up your fundraising page as soon as you register and share it straight away. The earlier people know, the more time they have to support you.
Explain why you’re taking on this challenge and what the hospice means to you. Personal stories are what inspire people to donate.
Remind people that every donation makes a difference – for example, £10 could pay for a patient’s meal whilst staying on our Bedded Unit, £30 could fund an hour of specialist nursing care.
Share updates, training milestones, and countdowns to keep your supporters engaged. Photos and videos work especially well.
Many employers offer match-funding, so ask if your company will double what you raise. You could also do office sweepstakes or team challenges.
Organise a quiz night, cake sale, or raffle to boost your total – it’s a fun way to involve friends and family.
Always thank your supporters. A quick message or post makes people feel appreciated and more likely to donate again.
By taking on a challenge and raising funds, you’re helping us provide vital care and support to patients and families right here in North Devon.

Siobhan Tindall took on the London Marathon in 2025 in memory of her mum, Christine, who was cared for on the Bedded Unit. She said “The whole experience from start to finish was amazing and to know that I was doing it for such a worthwhile cause was what kept me going. To be able to run for the hospice, when they supported mum and our family so much was an honour and something I’ll never forget.”
